As you read in Skip’s blog, it has been a rough couple of days. Unable to keep up with calories or fluids really wiped me out. While it continues to look like a bacterial infection, all the cultures have come back negative. Yesterday evening Heather force fed me spaghetti and we increased my pain medications. I felt great the rest of the evening and had a good sleep. Heather stayed with me last night since she was leaving for Las Vegas this morning with her sister Gail to join Uncle Dave and Johnny.

Today I woke up feeling pretty good and just finished a long walk, stopping by a number of beautiful gardens along the way. For those of you not in Seattle, it’s 85 degrees today and yes, rain is in the forecast for the first day of summer tomorrow. I was able to eat most of my breakfast and a little of my lunch along with a large Jamba Juice that Raymond brought me. Dr Wright is pleased I am improving but still not sure what is going on- so here I remain until we can all be confident I can leave the hospital and not return for a long time.

I have to say, initially I was a little frustrated with the UW where you have residents as well as your surgeon on your case. With over 7 months of history with the doctors at Northwest Hospital it was difficult to go through my history with everyone. Now I have a completely different perspective of the UW and the added value of a teaching hospital. After 7 months it is good medicine to get some fresh eyes on my illness. In addition to Dr. Wright I have the resident chief, Dr Combs, a 3rd year resident Dr Hamlet, and a 1st year resident Dr Schefelt. That puts a lot of eyes on my case. There is a competitive nature with the residents that makes them work that much harder to figure things out and gain an edge over their peers. I’m sure they order many more lab tests than I got at Northwest Hospital when I was there for an extended period in photo-131.jpgDecember. My surgeon Dr Wright is above the resident dance and usually stops by every afternoon to discuss where we are and where we are going. He also is responsible for keeping my oncologist Dr Doug Lee apprised of my case. When we initially met Dr Wright he was wearing a pink shirt, bow tie and blue and white striped pants. The picture on the left was my attempt to tease him a bit and advertise for Jamba Juice.

Overall I am feeling much better today than I have felt the last few days. I am cautious to say everything is on track for me to head home the end of the week, since we seem to always have surprises. Dancing on the edge of heaven is good practice for dancing through the many peaks and valleys we face. It reminds me to let go and learn from every experience. All I can say is there’s a whole lot of learning going on!

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

God is Good, All the Time, That’s Every Day, God is Good!

The bow tie is a good look for you, Don — I’d stick with it. 🙂

    Don,

After a lot of hard effort, (but none to begin to compare to yours) I got into this site to offer our encouragement as well as our prayers. Remember, God doesn’t give us more than we can handle and it appears He knows you quite well. Keep it up and we hope to see you on our next trip North.

Wow! This is like a high stakes adventure. You have a goal in sight and then all of a sudden your sidetracked without any warning. You slowly dig your way out and eventually get back on track. I have to say that your mental and physical strengths are extrodinary. I realize all the support and prayers you get, including mine, are helping a lot but you are truly an inspiration to all of us. By the way, I love the video and the bow tie is so classy. Please keep the video’s coming. Love ya, Art
