My, how time flies when you’re having fun. To my surprise I was able to leave the hospital at 11AM on July 4th. As we left the hospital I said to Heather “Oh the smell of the fresh air, the warmth, the flowers!”. Heather replied “We’re only in the parking lot Don!” Well, I had been 9 days in the hospital without the ability to taste the fresh air and warmth of summer.

We headed to Whidbey and with a new medical pass we were able to avoid the ferry line and get right on the ferry. It was about 12:30 when we got a call from Sam and Kirsten who were already at our house on Whidbey and we discovered that the parade that runs by our house dhbeach-log.JPGwas to start at 1PM, and not at noon as we had expected. The deputy sheriffs let us drive past the barricades and we arrived just in time to watch the parade. It was so great, this has been a tradition for our family since we bought the beach house in 1998. It was so great to visit with friends knowing an hour earlier I was still in the hospital. Oh, and the marine air almost brought me to tears.

I have been feeling good although yesterday, Friday, I was a little down and out from my chemo- it always hits me hardest 3 or 4 days after my chemo. Today I am feeling much better. We were able to get a standing order for my PT (prothrombin time) testing at Whidbey General Hospital which saves a trip into town every day. My PT is in the right range so I think we have my blood thinners figured out. Even when I’m moving slow it’s great just to sit by the water and read.

Today Brian and Kerry are here with Caleb and Anna Rose. Josh and Inga also decided to come up so we are having a great time together. This morning Randy and Debbie came by on their new boat to say hi. It’s so great for me to have so many friends around.Don on the beach

I will write again soon but please remember that no news is good news. If I am hurting I will let you know, and if I am unable to write, Skip will post a blog update. Thank you again for all your prayers. Heather and I feel like we are gliding/flying on your prayers and we are having the best time together. With the boys in Mexico until Monday night we get to be like newlyweds going to breakfast together in Langley and laying in the sun talking and napping.

God is Good, all the time, God is Good!

Don,Praise God you could spend the 4th with your family. That feeling of release and freedon is exhilirating. Getting out of the hospital for a period is like getting out of jail or addiction, the fresh air, the smell of woman and children, the aroma of God’s wonderful creations is so great and we often don’t see the blessings of Gods creation. Art went to Hong Kong but I know he loves you, so e-mail him if possible. Hope you don’t mind my e-mails as I’m not an intimate friend but I am a Brother in Christ. Im losing weight and exercising so I can go on the Mexico mission in November. God Bless, Tom Fairchild

Don – thought about you guys over the 4th and glad to hear you were able to make it up to Whidbey for a few days. More than once I remembered last 4th of July when we got to watch the parade w/ you guys and Hestads… such a great memory! -dustin
