Precious moments

As of about 7pm last night, Don was resting peacefully. Every so often he would wince from pain. A long time friend came to see him in the morning, and he happened to be awake, so there were a few precious moments shared. Through the rest of the day, he sometimes showed recognition, and at other times could hear what was being said to him. But his response gradually lessened. He slept much of the time.

Heather is with him all the time now, with short periods of relief from Jaime & Inga. She has a cot by his bed where she sleeps at night and naps during the afternoon. She has taken over 95% of the caregiving now. The nurses check in every so often to administer and regulate the painkiller IV’s, and to check on his ostomy. Johnny & Bo come over to visit him after school, and stay through the early evening when they go home to do their school work. Heather has been given remarkable and extraordinary grace and strength by God during this time. She feels very supported by family, friends, all of your prayers, and has been encouraged and uplifted by your blog responses.

Heather, Johnny & I had a time of anointing Don and praying for him in the early evening. After we were finished, he opened his eyes, raised his head slightly, and asked “Where am I?” We assured him he was in the hospital. He then said, “I dreamed I had died.” We told him he was still with us, and we were not ready to let him go.

I think you all understand and share in the dilemma of the heart right now — the continuing prayers (pounding on God’s door) and hope for a miraculous restoration, set against the the knowledge that Don has fought the cancer so hard and so courageously, his body is so tired and worn down, and he so deserves his rest now.

I had some emails overnight inquiring about the latest, so I know there are many, many of you awaiting news. I will do my best to keep you informed.

As our brother Don always says, God is good, all the time. God is good.

Skip, for Don & Heather

    Skip,
I tried to write a comment for Don a few days ago and for some reason it didn’t work. I am a stranger but sister in Jesus in NC who is praying. I just want you to know now that I realize it must be very hard for you to keep the updates up when your own heart is breaking. Thank you for your faithfulness to Don and to us in this endeavor. Praying for you all.

    Dear Heather,

We have quietly read and kept a vigil for Don and for you and Johnny and Bo. We are deeply grateful to Don for the kindness he showed Robert when Robert came to your home from time to time. Robert commented several times what a neat dad Johnny has. Don’s journey has been a quiet inspiration to us all, as has your strength and grace. You are all in our hearts.

    Pat, Norm and Robert Scott
